Rock the Vote, sponsored by the Center for Scholarly & Civic Engagement and Student Life, totaled 223 new registered voters. An additional 272 students took the registration cards with them for mail-in.

The All College Council raised a record of $5,000 for scholarships at its Third Annual Silent Auction during All College Day.  The scholarships benefit current employees or their immediate family who attend the college.

More than 670 students directly participated in Constitution Day activities, which included a reading of the Constitution at SCC, a panel debate at PRC and a Game Show at CPC. In addition, 800 pocket copies of the Constitution were handed out at SCC, along with versions at CPC and PRC.

Lisa Huang, an allied Health Sciences librarian, has been named this year’s professional member recipient of the HealthLINE Travel Award to attend the South Central Region/Medical Library Association’s Annual Conference in Lubbock.  HealthLINE is a consortium of medical librarians and libraries in North Central Texas.

Academic Advisor Caryn Hawkins won a $1,000 scholarship for a Collin College student while attending Texas Women’s University’s recent annual Transfer Counselor’s Workshop.  The scholarship will be awarded to a student who transferred to TWU this fall.

For a second year in a row, Collin College’s Surgical Technology program received the “Merit Award” by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. The honor was a tribute to the college’s 100 percent pass rate on the Certified Surgical Technologist examination. Collin College’s surgical technology also has a 100 percent job placement rate for graduates.

Colleen Smith, senior vice president of Academic Affairs and Student Development, and Dani Day, associate vice president of Teaching and Learning, were selected by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to present a session at the annual SACSCOC meeting in December.  Dr. Smith has also been appointed by SACSCOC to chair Commission accreditation committees for various colleges seeking reaffirmation of accreditation in the southern region. Dr. Smith has also been appointed by McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller to serve as a member of the McKinney Community Development Corporation by the McKinney City Council.

Dr. Peggy Brown held a book signing and reading for her new book, Strangler Figs at A Real Bookstore in Fairview on Aug. 18. The book is available at that bookstore and B&N at Collin Creek Mall.

Professor Rebecca Orr led multiple sections in Pearson’s Course Redesign conference Sept. 28-29 in New Orleans. Collin College student Charlotte Sauder also appeared in a student panel section during the conference.

Dr. Rosemary Karr, professor of Developmental Education-Math has been selected as a fellow with the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA).  Dr. Karr will be inducted at a ceremony in Houston on Nov. 8. CLADEA fellows are recognized for their “lifetime contributions and national/international influence within the field of postsecondary learning assistance and developmental education.”

Counselor Amy Lenhart has been elected to the board of the American College Counseling Association (ACCA), a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Lenhart began her third year of a three-year term in July 2012 as an ACCA member-at-large.

Dr. Levi Bryant, professor of philosophy, recently published: “The Other Face of God:  Lacan, Theological Structure, and the Accursed Remainder” in Speculations III, Brooklyn: Punctum Books and “Alliances and a Throw of the Dice” in Dungeons & Dragons and Philosophy, Jon Cogburn, ed., Chicago: Open Court, 2012. Bryant also recently completed the following presentations in September: “The Gravity of Things: An Introduction to Onto-Cartography,” hosted by University of Dundee Philosophy Department, Royal Burgh, Scotland and “Towards a Machine-Oriented Aesthetics: On the Power of Art,” at The Matter of Contradiction Conference, Limousin, France.
