Here is the latest in the new student voice series. Momoh is back with tips and habits to stay focused throughout the school year.

School is officially in session Cougars! It’s time to get back into those good habits and setting those goals that will get you closer to where you need to be. Whether you’re an avid note taker who works best in the classroom, a visual learner that enjoys the quiet of the library or a student who prefers study groups at a café, know that the steps you are taking now are the ones that will help you achieve those long-term goals. For my Cougars who aren’t so sure on which habits to adopt or those who are looking for new learning techniques, here are some helpful tips and ideas from your fellow Cougars that will help you start the school year off right.

“I keep a schedule where I manage my time for studying, so when it comes time to get my assignments done I put all my distractions away. Distractions being my phone—that’s my biggest distraction. I just really make sure to study at the time. I set my schedule to study.”

-Anuoluwapo Adebayo, pursuing a degree in marketing

“I keep a checklist. Every time there’s a new assignment I write it down along with the due date so I can stay on track. I also always keep a set goal and tell myself that in order to reach this set goal I have to take these certain steps every day.”

-Marquise Dawson, pursuing a degree in arts

“I go to the library between classes or as soon as I’m done with a class I go to a Starbucks and I get work done. I just attack what it is that I have to do and get it done, rather than thinking about everything I have to do it all at once. I just work on one thing at a time which makes things less stressful.”

-Hunter Jagger, pursuing a degree in middle school education

“I try to take the best notes that I can and try to soak in all the material earlier on. That way it’s easier to refer to back to, so as soon as you receive work start working on it, get it done and don’t procrastinate.”

-Garrett Green, undecided degree
