Collin College Screens “Queen of Katwe”

Jan. 18, 2018- Collin College’s Auteur Film Series will screen “Queen of Katwe” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Angelika Film Center, The Shops at Legacy, 7205 Bishop Road in Plano. The film is based on a true story about a Ugandan girl who lives in a slum and discovers a startling aptitude for chess, leading her to compete in the World Chess Olympiads. This screening is presented in conjunction with African American History Month.

This film highlights the strong spirit of the ordinary working person, showcasing the2017-2018 Collin College Auteur Film Series theme “Caste of Thousands: Films About the Working Class.”

Queen of Katwe impresses me not just because of the remarkable talent of Phiona, the title character, but also because of the unparalleled moral courage of her mother. Mothers are so often the source of great power in working-class stories,” said Dr. Carolyn Perry, director of the Collin College Auteur Film Series.

All screenings are free and open to the public. Doors open 30 minutes before the film begins, and seating is limited. Some material may not be suitable for all audiences. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion led by Collin College faculty and staff.
