Is There a Scholarship Waiting For You?

Cougar News had the opportunity to get the latest information about scholarships from Kim Dalfonso, Collin College Foundation special projects coordinator. Read on to see how to get a scholarship.

When can I apply for a Foundation scholarship?

Students can apply Jan. 15-March 25 for fall 2018 scholarships. Visit at www.collin.edu/foundation .

Do I need to have a high GPA in order to apply?

No, the Foundation only requires that you have a 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to apply for a scholarship.  We have more than 200 different opportunities posted. Certain scholarships are based on a student’s GPA, but most scholarships are based upon a variety of factors including program major, county of residence, community service, financial need and more.

What does a Foundation scholarship pay for?

Ninety nine percent of Foundation scholarships are valued at $1,250, which covers the tuition and fees for approximately 13 credit hours for two semesters.  Books can be included if less hours are taken.

Do I have to be a full-time student?

No, most of the scholarships require students to carry a minimum of only six credit hours for two semesters. However, some scholarships may require nine or 12 hours.

What are my chances of being awarded a scholarship?  The Foundation will award more than 550 scholarships. Last year, approximately 1,200 applications were received, so there was a one in two chance.

Can my continuing education and/or non-credit certificate classes be paid for via Foundation scholarships?

No, the Foundation does not currently pay for non-credit courses.

How does Financial Aid affect a scholarship?

Students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA to determine if they qualify for Financial Aid (Federal/State grants or loans). However, it is not required. If you receive a scholarship and a federal grant, the scholarship will pay the tuition and fees which leaves the federal grant money to help pay your living expenses.

Are international students eligible to apply for and receive scholarships?

International students are welcome to complete the general application and are eligible to receive general scholarships.

Can I be awarded more than one Foundation scholarship?

No, the Foundation strives to award scholarships to the most students possible, so recipients may only receive one award per academic year.  Students are encouraged to apply for external scholarships.
