May 1, 2018 – Collin College’s Alpha Mu Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has been recognized for its academic and public service work in the 2017-18 academic year. The honors include individual and chapter recognitions.

Alpha Mu Tau (AMT) was honored as a Top 100 Chapter and was named an International Distinguished Chapter at the Catalyst Centennial Celebration, 100th Annual Phi Theta Kappa International Convention, held April 18-22 in Kansas City, Mo. AMT was one of only 36 chapters of 1,300 to earn this Distinguished Chapter honor.

Other notable honors during the international convention included:

  • AMT Chapter President David Parker, of McKinney, was elected Division II International Vice President for 2018-19.
  • The AMT Honors in Action project “Prescribed Pain,” an opioid epidemic awareness event, earned an International Distinguished Project recognition. The event drew 200 people and raised $1,500 for the drug counseling organization Grace To Change.
  • The chapter was honored was honored for being International Five Star Level, Texas Region.
  • The chapter earned an International Distinguished College Project Award.
  • Vice President of Service Monique Spence placed first in the International Job Interview Competition.

AMT Chapter members also attended the Texas Regional Convention March 8-11 in Houston. The chapter campaigned for regional office and was elected to the position of Texas Regional President for the 2018-19 academic calendar year. Chapter Secretary Fadi Istelinides, of Frisco, spearheaded the campaign and will represent Alpha Mu Tau as president for the Texas Region for 2018-19.

The chapter also received the following awards and honors at regionals:

  • Five Star Rating in the Chapter Development Plan
  • Five Star Competitive Edge Completion, Fadi Istelinides
  • District II Hall of Honor Students: Fadi Istelinides, Monique Spence, James Carter, David Parker, Adriana Solis, Adi Weissfield, Jessica Dressler, Jessica Myron, Vanessa Storaci, and Professor Brandy S. Jumper
  • Texas Region Horizon Award for Chapter Advisors, Dr. Jessica Hargis
  • Certificate of Appreciation for service to the Texas Region, Dr. Jessica Hargis
  • Texas Phi Theta Kappa (five years of service pin), Dr. Jessica Hargis
  • Texas Region Hall of Honor for Officers, Monique Spence
  • ‘Tejas’ Outstanding Friend of Texas Award, Dr. Jennifer Blalock
  • Texas Region College Project Award of Merit
  • Honors in Action and College Project Participation Award, Alpha Mu Tau
  • Honors in Action Award of Distinction-Theme 1: Myth & Reality (top scoring project for Theme 1 in the region, ranked No. 1 out of 92 chapters) 
  • First Finalist, Most Distinguished Chapter (second highest scoring chapter in the region, ranked No. 2 out of 92 chapters)
