July 23, 2018 – From emotionally- and politically-charged dramas to a groundbreaking musical collaboration, Collin Theatre Center’s 2018-2019 performance season has something for every theatre lover.
The season begins with “House of Home,” Oct. 9-14 in the John Anthony Theatre. In it, a small southern town is forced to examine itself after a shocking tragedy and must look to their faith and sense of community to carry on. “House of Home” was written by Bekah Brunstetter, screenwriter of the Emmy winning television series “This is Us.” Tickets range from $10-$15.
The CTC will present Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie,” Nov. 29-Dec. 9 in the college’s Black Box Theatre. “The Glass Menagerie” is the iconic and heartbreaking story of Tom, an aspiring poet, who will do anything to move on from his factory job and break free from his overbearing mother and shy, introverted sister, Laura. It is considered an American classic which speaks to audiences as clearly today as it did when it premiered in 1945. Tickets range from $10-$15
The theatre will change gears and offer “Little Gems: An Evening of One Acts,” Dec. 6-9 in its Alt Lab Theatre. “Little Gems” features several short-length plays with American themes. Supervised by theatre faculty and directed by second-year students, this exciting evening will feature a range of rarely performed works. Admission is free.
Collin College’s Dance and Theatre departments will collaborate for the first time ever on a musical to kick off 2019. A stage adaptation of “Footloose” is planned from March 5-10, 2019, in the John Anthony Theatre. In it, the new kid in town encounters a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. Based on the movie musical that captured the nation’s attention, and set to the rhythm of its Oscar- and Tony-nominated Top 40 score, “Footloose” celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people and guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. Tickets are $15-$20.
Collin Theatre Center will close out its 2018-2019 season with “Baltimore,” May 2-12, 2019 in the college’s Black Box Theatre. “Baltimore” is the story of a racially-charged incident that divides resident advisor Shelby’s first-year students. As Shelby finds herself in the middle of a conversation she does not want to have, the pressure to address the controversy mounts from residents, the new dean and even her best friend. Shelby must decide if she will enter the fray or watch her community burst at the seams. Sharp, funny and searing, “Baltimore” is a timely drama about racism on college campuses. Tickets are $10-$15.
Patrons who would like to see all five plays and two major dance productions – Dance Fusion and interACTION – may choose a 2018-2019 season subscription. A season pass for general admission adults is $80. A student/senior/faculty/staff season pass is $56. Those are savings of $15 and $9 respectively. Students include students at any school. Seniors include anyone age 55 and older.
