Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast Focuses on Education

January 2, 2019 – The 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast is planned for Saturday, Jan. 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at Collin College’s Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center. The theme for this year’s breakfast is “Intelligence + Character = True Education.”

The annual celebration of Dr. King’s life and work is free and open to the public. It will include a panel discussion by school district superintendents and educators from Plano, Allen, McKinney, Frisco and Wylie, as well as presentations and student performances.

“We must remember that intelligence is not enough,” Dr. King wrote in a 1948 paper while attending Morehouse College. “Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education.”

Event Co-Chair Evelyn McKnight said the Power Leadership Breakfast Committee drew inspiration from that quote and decided education should be in the spotlight this year.

“Education is the greatest tool to enhance one’s thinking ability and character,” McKnight said. “We are very excited to have local school superintendents on the panel this year to address education in our area.”

A business and health expo will be held in the Plano Campus atrium following the breakfast. The public is invited to visit with vendors and learn about local businesses in the health and education industries. Businesses interested in participating can sign up at www.tinyurl.com/ccmlkexpo19. The deadline is Jan. 8.

The Collin College Plano Campus is located at 2800 E. Spring Creek Pkwy. in Plano.

Members of the Plano MLK Celebration Committee are also organizing the annual MLK COME.Unity church service at One Community Church. Planned for Sunday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m., the service is presented in association with the Collin County MLK Association. Organizers said the service will be “an evening of inspiration, hope and challenge” and will feature scripture, a multi-ethnic, multi-denominational choir and a panel discussion on race and reconciliation in the church. One Community Church is located at 2400 Texas 121 in Plano.
