April 18, 2019- Collin College recently received the inaugural Program of Promise Award from the National Organization for Student Success (NOSS), formerly known as the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). NOSS created the Programs of Promise: Outstanding Recognition for foundational coursework, learning assistance and advising in higher education to honor and recognize exceptional programs that exemplify the organization’s goals.
According to Denise Lujan, president of NOSS, submissions for the award are open to student-focused community colleges and universities which have implemented successful programs.
“The beauty of Collin College’s approach is the multi-departmental effort,” said Lujan. “Most importantly, the college’s focus ensured collaboration within all levels of administration and faculty so that state mandates were met and issues were resolved. In addition, Collin College proactively met the needs of students. This cohesiveness is something to be recognized and shared with others across the country.”
To comply with House Bill 2223, the Collin College Developmental Education Department revamped its program to offer courses to underprepared students using a co-requisite model. The co-requisite model is an instructional model in which students who place into remedial coursework take a college-level course with support on the remedial concepts.
Collin College’s multi-departmental co-requisite project includes four math co-requisite models and three integrated reading and writing models. Decisions were faculty-driven with administrative and student services support. Students were offered a support system which included academic coaches for cohorts, imbedded instructional assistants, weekly tutoring and study skills sessions, remediation for students who fail a co-requisite pair, professional development for faculty and training for advisors.
“We are humbled and grateful to be named a NOSS Program of Promise,” said Dr. Tina Jackson, Collin College district director of developmental education. “Our faculty and staff worked tirelessly to ensure that the implementation of the co-requisite model at Collin College was successful.”
