In Brief – September 2019

Jacqueline Grayczyk, Financial Aid & Veterans Services Advisor, graduated from the Leadership Wylie Class XV.  She will be serving as the Wylie Class XVI liaison and Leadership Wylie Board Member for 2019-2020. Associate Dean Daphne Babcock and Tiffany Heitz (Program Manager in the Vet Assistant Program) have been selected for the upcoming Leadership Wylie Class.

Dr. Patrick Larue presented “Determining When and How Charges of Genocide are Used in Tribunals and the ICC” at the 2019 American Political Science Association (APSA) Annual Meeting.

Adjunct Faculty Dr. Alon Milwicki successfully defended his dissertation, “Baptizing Nazism: An Analysis of the Religious Roots of American Neo-Nazism,” at American University.

Dr. Jason Morgan will serve on a sub-committee of the Plano Heritage Commission which is developing a Conservation District Ordinance for the City of Plano.

The Collin College Foundation hosted the annual Scholarship Ceremony and President’s Circle Reception Sept. 12, celebrating 556 scholarships awarded to students for a total of more than $736,000. The President’s Circle welcomed a record 12 new members and recognized five donors upgrading to higher levels. This is the Foundation’s most prestigious giving society for patrons with cumulative giving of $20,000 or more. Also, Trustee Fred Moses and his family were recognized with a Collin College flag honoring memorial gifts made in the name of Mazzie Moses. Thank you to all the donors, volunteers, scholarship application reviewers, Foundation Board members and staff who made it a special occasion.

Professor George Neal is collaborating with Brad Huff of Frisco Arts and the Collin County Boys and Girls Club for volunteer opportunities for the Collin College ARTS Club.

Dean Mike Coffman and Professor Jeff Fant secured the opportunity for Collin College to become an Aruba Mobility Academy. Aruba chose two universities and one community college across America to become newly certified academies. The Aruba Mobility Academy is the world’s first accredited mobility education program designed for universities and colleges. The program’s goal is to teach tomorrow’s IT professionals all about the wireless LAN fundamentals that are critical as networks embrace mobility.

Executive Director of Emerging Technology Grants Dr. Ann Beheler received the Innovation of the Year award at the 2019 HI TEC Conference.

Jennifer Rice, Professor of Developmental Math, has been selected as a fellow for the 16th  cohort of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Project Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship, and Service (ACCCESS). This project is a mentoring and professional development initiative for two-year college faculty. Fewer than 30 mathematics professors who are in their first three years of teaching are selected for this program each year nationally.  Rice is the fourth Collin College faculty member to be selected for this honor. The other professors were: Katerina Vishnyakova (Cohort 5), Catherine Thurman (Cohort 11) , Leah Beck (Cohort 15). 

Amy Lenhart has been appointed to the National Academies Effort on Mental Health in Higher Education (National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine). The national committee will be researching best practices in counseling and Lenhart will serve on a committee titled, “Supporting the Whole Student: Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Well-being in Higher Education.”

Gaye Cooksey, Dean of Evening/Weekend College, was recognized as a nominee for the 2019 Philanthropist Award at the first Dynamic Women of Color Summit.

Suzy Sloan Jones, Professor of Art, was featured in a Plano Magazine “Girl Boss 2019: Ten Women Changing Plano” feature. See the article at http://planomagazine.com/girl-boss-2019-suzy-sloan-jones/.

Dr. Rebecca Orr, Professor of Biology, has been featured in a video series titled “Why I Teach” for Howard Hughes Medical Institute Biointeractive. The following links are the first two videos in that series.

Pat McAuliff, Director of Fire Science served as lead instructor for the Fire Sprinkler Systems course conducted at the 90th Annual Texas A&M Municipal Fire Training School. McAuliff has served at the annual fire school program in College Station for the past 21 years.

Writing Center Manager Joani Reese had a flash fiction chapbook, “Now that I Live Alone,” accepted for publication by Bending Genres Literary Magazine. The book will be published this coming fall. Her poem “Elegy” will be published by the literary magazine Writing in a Woman’s Voice.

Dr. Randy Collins and Professor Rosemary Karr co-authored and submitted an article to the Journal of College Academic Support Programs titled, “Student-to-Student Support in Developmental Mathematics Courses.”

Professor Joel Spina published a paper on the Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN) titled “The Behavior of Credit-Rating Agencies During the Recent Global Financial Crisis.”

Dr. Dallie Clark, Professor of Humanities, had two poems published in SMU’s Pony Expressions.

Patrick Getty, Geology Professor, submitted a manuscript entitled “Evidence that the fossil insect trackway Bifurculapes laqueatus was made underwater” to the journal Acta Geologica Polonica.

Dean Mary Barnes-Tilley was re-appointed by the McKinney City Council to serve a two-year term on the McKinney Community Development Corporation. As part of MCDC, she serves as the liaison to McKinney Main Street and serves on the MCDC Community Grants and Marketing subcommittees.

The nursing program has started to accept applications for the new RN-to-BSN program scheduled to start Spring 2020. This first cohort will be offered to 35 students in honor of the college’s 35th anniversary. In addition, the nursing division is currently preparing for candidacy for accreditation of the BSN program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

The Collin College Nursing Student Association will be receiving a cash award for their volunteer work with the Earl Young Bone Marrow Donor Drive.
