August 23, 2019 – Collin College Respiratory Care students Brittany Kaberline, Sarah Moody, Anne McIntyre and Schuylar Brown took first place at the Texas Sputum Bowl championship in Waco in July. The team will proceed to nationals in November.
The Texas Society for Respiratory Care hosts the Sputum Bowl as part of its annual conference. The academic competition tests student teams from different colleges on respiratory therapy and related health sciences. Two teams of three face off and try to buzz in the correct answers before the other team. This is the eighth year that Collin College has taken first place in the state competition.
“I think our team developed a sense of comradery with the competition experience and all the practice as well,” Kaberline said. “Being able to continue Collin’s legacy of winning the state championship and progressing to nationals has helped build confidence in the knowledge we have learned in the Respiratory Care program.”
The team will go on to represent Collin College and Texas at the national conference of the American Association of Respiratory Care in November in New Orleans, La. Collin College won first place at the national competition in 2017 and second place in 2018.
“This statewide and national exposure is not only good for our program but for Collin College as an institution,” team coach Chad Essary said. “Our students have practiced extremely hard, and we are proud of their accomplishment.”
