March 12, 2020 – Collin College is offering a variety of camps this summer. Middle school and high school students can select camps ranging from pastry and dance to crime scene investigation. The following camps, held in June, July, and August are located on the college’s campuses in Frisco and Plano.
Texas All-Star Jazz Camp – Virtual

The Collin College Jazz Program is excited to announce that the annual Texas All-Star Jazz Camp will now be offered as a Free Virtual Jazz Camp, open to all music students ages 13-adult, as well as music educators and band directors.
Virtual sessions will be offered through the Zoom webinar platform Monday, August 3 through Friday, August 7 beginning at 1:45pm and ending at 5pm. Members of the Collin College Jazz Faculty will teach workshops on a variety of topics including jazz listening, jazz theory, jazz improvisation, jazz piano, bass lines, comping, and rhythmic skills. There will also be a special workshop with our featured guest artist, saxophonist Alex LoRe, one of the leading voices on the New York jazz scene.
The virtual camp will be made available at no cost* to participants, but registration is required in advance. Following registration, you will receive an email with a full schedule of workshops. The weekend before the camp begins, you will receive another email with a Zoom link that you can use to access any or all of the workshops throughout the week.”

Participants will learn crime scene processing techniques. Campers will participate in various exercises that apply forensic techniques to the identification, documentation, preservation, and collection of various types of crime scene evidence to include: fingerprints, blood evidence, DNA, shoe and tire impressions, and search procedures. Mock crime scene activities and evidence are age appropriate and challenging. Campers entering grades 9-12 are eligible to attend. The cost is $125 per participant and includes snacks and a drink. Find out why learning science is fun. Calling all middle school students for an exciting four, half-day summer SMASH camp. Students can explore their potential in science and math-related disciplines and learn about topics in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and math with fun, hands-on activities. This camp is designed with an interdisciplinary approach to give students a holistic view of how science works. Students entering grades 7-9 are eligible to attend. Cost is $80. Join Collin College’s faculty and staff for a week of immersion into the art of photography. During the camp, students will explore the studio where they will each create professional quality studio portraits. Students will also be photographing on campus with instructors, learning the basics of photography software, and making their own photographic prints. The cost of the camp is $150 and includes all the supplies campers will need, including a camera. Each student will also receive a camp t-shirt. There will be two separate camp sessions. The first session is open to students entering sixth grade through eighth grade; the second session is open to students entering ninth grade through 12th grade. The 20th annual Collin Summer Dance Festival is for beginning through advanced dancers, 14 years old and up. This festival typically offers classes in Yoga for Dancers, Pilates Mat Work, Body Conditioning, Dance Improvisation, Contemporary, Classical Ballet, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Swing, and more. The cost is $125 for early registration paid by May 1 or $150 if paid after May 1. Registration includes five days of classes, a t-shirt, and lunch on Friday. The registration deadline is June 28. Registration received after June 29 is subject to the festival coordinator’s permission and may include limited class selection, limited Friday lunch selection, and limited festival t-shirt sizes. The late registration fee is $175. Refunds may be given up to two weeks prior to the festival start date. Any requests made after that time will be charged a refund fee of $25. The Department of Communication Design will host an Animation Technology Camp this summer for campers entering grades 7-8. Campers will learn about the 3D Animation Pipeline and learn and apply the 12 Principles of Animation in two 3D animation projects via Bouncing Ball Animation and a Ball Obstacle Course. Participants will also learn and apply the four-step process of 3D animation (planning, blocking, spline, and polish) and learn and apply the 3D software skills to pose 3D character rigs. No previous drawing skills are required. The cost is $150 per camper and includes hands-on instruction from Collin College faculty as well as a camp t-shirt. The Young Artist Masters Camp will host amazing local artists/educators for a week-long art summer camp. Campers will learn about historical and contemporary master artists while creating their own studies. A variety of techniques, mediums, and compositions will be investigated in media-specific studios to help each student find his or her artistic voice. Each media studio is limited to 15 seats. An exhibition and reception are planned at the end of the week. Students entering grades 6-12 are welcome to join. The cost is $175 for the week. All supplies are included along with a camp t-shirt. Inspired by the legacy of pioneers like NASA’s Katherine Johnson, the Girls STEM Quest is a day-long series of workshops and experiential learning opportunities focused on promoting and encouraging middle school-aged girls to enter Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. Participants will listen to an inspiring keynote speaker, experience a variety of interactive lab-based seminars, acquire a focused look of different career fields with a STEM industry expert or educator, and visit the high-tech discovery zone. Girls entering grades 6-8 are eligible to attend. The event includes lunch, a t-shirt and a canvas draw-string bag to collect resources provided throughout the day.
