Sept. 14, 2020 – Collin College District President Dr. Neil Matkin used a Hilti cordless cut-out tool to slice a specially-designed ceremonial “ribbon” in an official opening ceremony that was as unique as the new Technical Campus it celebrated over the weekend. More than 800 people explored the campus – which provides technical education in fields including automotive, computer networking, construction, electronics, HVAC, health care, welding, and more – during the Friday night ribbon cutting and a Saturday open house, Sept. 11-12.
The campus, located at 2550 Bending Branch Way in Allen, features state-of-the-art learning spaces and labs designed to prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers in a growing job market, most with industry-recognized certifications. At the Technical Campus, students learn from experienced technicians and trade professionals on industry-standard equipment. The campus opened to students Aug. 24, while Friday night’s event served as its official opening.
The Technical Campus is a three-story, 340,000-square-foot, four building complex which provides a striking profile with its cantilevered second floor, integrated green spaces, and multiple “trade bars.” Designed to serve more than 7,000 students at full capacity, the campus features large, open lab spaces for collaboration on big projects, as well as industry-specific equipment to support a wide variety of programs.
Additionally, the campus has partnered with Allen ISD to create a shared space for its dual credit students in the 85,000-square-foot Building A, which also features common spaces, student services, and campus administration.
“Every aspect of this campus’s design speaks to the forward-looking nature of the programs students will find here,” Matkin said. “I could not be prouder of the work that went into this campus and the trained professionals who will come out of it.”
Programs offered at the campus include: Activity Care Professional, Automotive Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Collision Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), Computer Networking, Construction Management, Construction Technology (Carpentry , Electrical, Facilities Management, Plumbing and Safety), Electronic Engineering Technology, HVAC, Health Professions (CNA, EKG, PHLEB, EMT), Industrial Automation, Medical Assisting Advanced Practice, Rehabilitation Aide, and Welding Technology. Another new program, Pharmacy Technician, was recently approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and will be offered at the campus soon. Additional programs are pending approval by SACSCOC.
“The Technical Campus is the perfect facility to offer our newest technical and trade programs, all of which were designed to fit Collin County’s growing job market needs,” said Dr. J. Robert Collins, founding member and current chair of the Board of Trustees.
