Both Collin College basketball teams are headed to the regional tournament after stellar seasons. Regionals are set for March 7-10 in Lubbock.
The Lady Cougars finished the season with an impressive 11-3 conference, 26-4 overall record. The team is co-champion of the North Texas Junior College Academic Conference (NTJCAC) and will have the No. 1 seed for the regional tournament.
This co-championship makes the fourth year in a row that Collin has won the district title. Weatherford College went on a late-season run to tie the Lady Cougars with a win Feb. 28, earning its piece of the championship.
Coach Jeff Allen said he is proud of his team’s accomplishment, especially in light of injuries. The team had to play the last five games of the regular season without a post player.
“Mya Johnson, who was voted runner up player of the year in our conference, went down with a torn ACL and Jazmine Jackson, who was our second leading rebounder, went out with a meniscus tear,” Allen said. “But our team stepped up and showed what a great group they are. I’m very proud of this group and we are looking forward to the regional tournament.”
The Cougars men’s team closed out the season with a 8-4 conference record, going 20-9 overall and capturing the No. 2 spot in the conference behind McLennan. The Cougars split games with McLennan, a nationally-ranked team, earlier in the season.
“We’ve had a good year, finishing second in a very tough conference,” Coach Jim Sigona said. “This group of young men has worked hard all season long. The team is looking forward to the post season and hope to be playing our best basketball going into the regional tournament.”
