Learn to be a Hero at Collin College Leadership Camp

So, you’ve been bitten by a radioactive spider. What do you do now?

Clean the bite wound, apply a cool compress to help with pain and swelling, and seek further medical attention if you think the spider was one of the nastier varieties.

DO NOT try to climb up a wall or take on supervillains in outlandish costumes. It won’t end well.

Sadly, super powers aren’t that easy to get.

Thankfully, though, this summer’s Collin College Leadership Camp is offering you the chance to be a hero to the people around you, which is pretty super when you think about it.

The camp is Friday, Aug. 3 at the Prothro Center on Lake Texoma. Transportation is provided and participants can expect a full day of activities dedicated to games, mini workshops, team building and leadership skills development.

The camp theme of heroes in training came from a phrase in Leadership 101, a book by John C. Maxwell that praised the idea of empowering the leader within. From there, it was a short trip to empowering participants with ways to be heroes in other people’s lives.

“Students can be leaders,” Assistant Director of Student Engagement Stephen Rogers said. “They can grow within themselves and they can be the real heroes.”

The day’s activities will challenge students to think about leadership in different ways. Rogers said organizers want students to come away having a better connection to their classmates, faculty and staff.

“We want them to come back ready to lead on the college campus in 2018-19,” he said. “We really want to empower our students to take opportunities to make Collin the place they want to be and to find their future here.”

After all, Rogers said, being a hero is not about flying or having x-ray vision. It’s about making a difference in people’s lives, whether that is as a teacher, an emergency first responder or as someone who helps others achieve their goals in life.

“We want to empower people to know they can be a hero too,” he said.
