ROSE Award Finalists Named

Some of Collin College’s “superstars and unsung heroes” were honored at the Recognition of Service and Excellence (ROSE) Awards Finalist Ceremony.

That is what Collin College President Dr. Neil Matkin called the nominees gathered at the Collin Higher Education Center for the ceremony, June 14. The award honors staff members who consistently demonstrate Collin College’s core values via service to the college, staff, students and/or the community.

“The ROSE Award represents the highest honor for full-and part-time staff, and as they say for the Academy Awards, it is an honor to be nominated,” Samantha Dean, chair of the All College Council, said. “However, with 2,500 employees and nearly 54,000 students to serve, only the best of the best can qualify for the ROSE Award.”

The ROSE Award winners will be recognized at All College Day and at the September meeting of the Board of Trustees. The winners will receive a crystal award and a bouquet of yellow roses. The full-time ROSE Award winner will also receive a reserved parking space at her primary campus for a year.

This year’s full-time employee nominees are: Nichole Boone, reference librarian at the Plano Campus; Carolyn Braswell, counselor at the Plano Campus; Dr. Kimberly Head, director of Continuing Education Health Sciences at the Courtyard Center; Renee Long, executive assistant to the vice president/provost at the Frisco Campus; and Sherry Scamardo, program manager for Seniors Active In Learning (SAIL) at the Courtyard Center. The part-time employee nominees for this year are: Jillian Cyr, lead tutor in the McKinney Campus math lab, and Irma Santiago, clerk in the ACCESS/Counseling Office. The finalists were recognized at the June Collin College Board of Trustees meeting

The ceremony also included a tribute to ROSE Award nominee Abdullah Eren, who passed away on June 12, two days before. Eren was an HVAC technician at the McKinney Campus, who had previously worked at the Frisco Campus and Courtyard Center. He was known for his work ethic and pleasant demeanor. His nomination for the ROSE Award said he had a restless mind set on finding better ways to do the job.
