Tuition Assistance for Students, By Students Now Possible Through Collin College Student-to-Student Scholarships

March 29, 2018- For the first time, Collin College students can provide tuition assistance to fellow students through a new student-to-student option.

When paying their account balance online, students will see a “Student Scholarships” field prior to finalizing payment. A donation in any amount can be entered. Gifts will be pooled, with every dollar going directly to scholarships for fellow students.

“I received scholarships when I was a student, and I’m privileged now to provide them,” said Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College district president. “It’s one of the most powerful things you can do for someone. Being able to help a fellow student is a direct way to give back and assist someone in their educational journey.”

Stephany Miller is a wife and mother who is working full time while attending classes at Collin College. She plans to earn an associate degree and then transfer to The University of Texas at Dallas to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business. Miller received a Collin College Foundation Scholarship in the spring, thanks to State Farm. She said that scholarship made it possible for her to attend college.

“With our family living paycheck to paycheck, I wouldn’t have been able to do this on my own,” Miller said. “Not having to worry about taking out a loan, I can focus on my studies. Every time I open my books I think about how fortunate I am.”

Miller was excited when she found out about the student-to-student scholarships.

“Scholarships can make or break someone’s ability to go to school. If students could give a small amount, $1 or $5, it doesn’t seem like a lot, but it adds up. I plan to donate because I know how important it is.”
