April 26, 2018- Sixteen Collin College students represented Honduras at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York recently. Competing against teams from around the world, the college’s team was awarded Outstanding Delegation, the highest award at the conference. In addition, students Samantha Sayers (Lewisville) and Mohammad Khan (Prosper) won an award for a position paper.
Additional award-winning students include Cassidy Carson (Plano), Brian Castillo (Plano), Susan Cubberly (Frisco), Gabi Duncan (Plano), Milena Espinosa (McKinney), Jason Foley (The Colony), Jade Cardoso Soares Giovannini (Denton), Joey Jones (Little Elm), Karen Lopez (Carrolton), Ian McCall (Celina), Ann Offret (Frisco), Jackson Reed (Aubrey), Adrian Tran (Carrolton) and Sarah Zakrzewski (Plano).
The students represented Honduras on the general assembly, organization for migration, organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons, economic and social council and United Nations environmental assembly committees.
According to Collin College professor Tracy Meyer, only the top 10 percent of participating colleges receive outstanding delegation, and only two percent of students win position paper awards.
“Collin’s Model UN team is such an amazing opportunity for students,” said Meyer, who along with professor Sonia Iwanek, is a Collin College Model UN advisor. “It teaches them real-world critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that are applicable not just in the field of political science, but across all disciplines.”
