Faculty, Staff Honored with Annual Awards, Recognitions

Collin College’s Professor of the Year and ROSE Award winners were announced at All College Day, Aug. 17. Faculty and staff members were also recognized for their impact on students’ lives.

The winner of this year’s Professor of the Year award was Bill Ardis, professor of math at the Frisco Campus. Executive Vice President Brenda Kihl introduced the winner and offered the following comments about Professor Ardis. A dedicated and committed professor who always makes himself available to students, he actively searches for ways to challenge his classes. His highly-engaging teaching style and positivity makes the classroom comfortable for every student. He was described by a student as a “Jimmy Page of math professors” because of his fun-loving nature and the mastery of his craft. See a video about Professor Ardis here.

The winner of this year’s Associate Faculty of the Year award was Eilene Carver, associate professor of art at the Frisco Campus. In comments read by Dr. Kihl, Professor Carver was described as a born artist who gives students personalized instruction and promotes individual expression. She goes the extra mile by looking for opportunities to showcase student work. One student commented that “I’ve never taken an art class where I felt so accomplished.” See a video about Professor Carver here.

The winners of this year’s Recognition of Service and Excellence (ROSE) Awards were also named, honoring staff members who consistently demonstrate Collin College’s core values via service to the college, staff, students and/or the community.

This year’s Full-time ROSE Award winner was Nichole Boone, a reference librarian at the Plano Campus. Boone’s collaborative nature was lauded, as was her dedication to making the library a great place to learn. Accepting the award, Boone said, “Thank you to everybody who I work with. I couldn’t be who I am if I didn’t have all those people to help me out. Thank you so much.” Click here for the profile video which marked the occasion.

This year’s Part-time ROSE Award winner was Jillian Cyr. Cyr is the lead tutor in the McKinney Campus Math Lab. She was described as helpful and dedicated to student learning, focusing on meeting student needs and willing to take on the responsibility that comes with her position. This video was played as part of the award presentation.

Dr. Matkin also recognized several teachers and faculty members from the stage for going the extra mile with students. Staff and faculty members were nominated for recognition through the Q-less system or in nomination cards by May 2018 graduates.
