Fall Engineering Employer Networking Events

E3: Evening Engineering Event

Approximately 125 engineering, electronics and computer science students met with area employers and university partners recently at the E3: Evening Engineering Event. After a welcome from Dr. Donald Weasenforth, Frisco Campus VP/Provost, and a presentation on Collin College engineering degrees and transfer opportunities by Kate Smith, workforce career coach, students visited with industry and transfer partners.

Computer science student Brionna Brown decided to attend the E3 event because she was looking for an internship.

“It was an opportunity to sit face to face and get immediate responses from company recruiters,” said Brown, who is planning to transfer to The University of Texas at Dallas. “I handed out my résumé and learned about the companies. It was a good way to find out what they were looking for, and it is always beneficial to network directly with companies.”

Students had the opportunity to speak with admissions counselors from The University of Texas at Dallas, University of North Texas, The University of Texas at Arlington Midwestern State University, Tarleton University, and Texas A&M Commerce and discover the timeline and requirements for admission to the schools of engineering.

In addition, students connected with regional employers including Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Oncor, Siemens, Emerson, Kaman and more about career pathways and future employment opportunities, internships and mentorships in the engineering, electronics and computer science fields.

The fact that university admissions counselors were available at the event was convenient for computer science student Kenneth Millerson who was able to pick up a packet of information from his transfer school of choice, The University of Texas at Dallas.

“I spoke to representatives from all but one of the companies,” Millerson said. “This is the perfect introductory seminar for people considering engineering. You can learn how much time you are looking at and what you need to take.”

Ask the Experts Event Coming Soon

If you missed the E3 event, another employer networking event is coming up soon. Free and open to students, alumni and the community, “Ask the Experts,” an employer panel and networking event, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 from noon-2 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at the Frisco Campus conference center. The event is sponsored by the Career Centers, Workforce Career Coaches and the Student Activity Fee Advisory Committee.

Students will have the opportunity to ask employers how to break into career fields with limited or no experience, important skills and qualities for careers, how to set themselves apart from the competition, new tools, job searching tips, career trends and more.

The noon event is designed for students interested in business careers and will include representatives from State Farm, Nike, DART, Lowes, Mayan Technologies, the City of Plano, Keller Williams and USM Systems.

The evening event is targeted to students interested in technology programs such as computer networking, cybersecurity and computer systems and will include free professional headshots and a brief, moderated panel prior to open networking. Representatives from Elemental Cyber Security, Mayan Technologies, McAfee, Roland Technology, State Farm and Symantec will be available for networking.

RSVPs are requested but not required. RSVP on CougarConnect (collin.campuslabs.com/engage) and search for “Ask the Experts.”
