Collin College’s Student Government Association Wins Event of the Year at 2019 TJCSGA State Convention

April 29, 2019 — Collin College’s Student Government Association, SGA, was recently awarded Event of Year at the 2019 Texas Junior College Student Government Association State Convention for their program “Love Does Not Hurt: An Oath Against Domestic Violence.”

The event was held last October at the Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center. The event was aimed at helping individuals affected by domestic violence. Community leaders were invited to speak about their efforts to stop domestic violence, such as Plano MayorHarry LaRosiliere, McKinney Mayor George Fuller, and U.S. Rep. Van Taylor, R-Plano.

The event was a collaboration among SGA, the Muslim Student Association and the Office of Student Engagement. SGA President Marilyn Abedrabbo, who spearheaded the event, said it was an honor for Collin to receive recognition at the state level for such an important event.

“This recognition showcases all the wonderful resources at Collin College and the platform it provides for its students to create events such as these,” Abedrabbo said. “After we won the award many people came up to us to tell us they wanted to do a similar event at their colleges to bring more awareness on this issue. That is such a great honor.”

Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services Dr. Albert Tezeno said the event showcased how Collin College student leaders are making a difference in society by hosting events with an important message.

“This award means a great deal to Collin because it indicates that our students are capable of performing beyond the walls of our institution,” Tezeno said.
