May 16, 2019- This fall Collin College will offer a new wireless class, Wireless Network Security, at the Frisco Campus (Preston Ridge Campus), 9700 Wade Blvd. The class prepares students to take the Certified Wireless Security Professional (CWSP) industry certification. The new wireless class is part of the college’s new associate of applied science computer networking wireless track which includes four classes in wireless technology that prepare students for different industry certifications.
“Most people who want to learn wireless technology are taking vendor training,” said Jeff Fant, professor of convergence technology. “Collin College is the only higher education institution that I am aware of that is offering this training, and we are offering it at affordable prices.”
According to Mike Coffman, associate dean of academic affairs, the college offers training for wireless certifications that are not vendor specific, allowing students to have an expansive skillset.
“We held think tanks, and Collin College’s wireless program was developed with advisory board members as an innovative response to those meetings,” Coffman said. “Technology changes rapidly, and that is why we offer a capstone class which allows us to adapt as industries change, keeping our program responsive to industry demands.”
Collin College wireless classes prepare students for the following industry certifications: Certified Wireless Technician (CWT), Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA), Certified Wireless Security Professional (CWSP), and Certified Wireless Design Professional (CWDP). The Wireless Network Design class, which prepares students for the CWDP certification, will be offered spring 2020. Students interested in taking the new Wireless Network Security class must take two prerequisite courses or provide proof of industry certification in CWT and CWNA.
