June 10, 2019– Dr. Abe Johnson, vice president and provost of the Plano Campus, has been appointed to the Commission on Economic and Workforce Development of the American Association of Community Colleges [AACC].

The AACC, which Collin College is a member of, is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges. The association represents nearly 1,200 two-year institutions and more than 12 million students.

“I am excited to contribute through the commission and be a positive force for workforce development not only locally but nationally as well,” Johnson said. “My higher education journey began at a community college, and I have seen the scope of what community colleges can do for developing a well-trained workforce and the impact of such a workforce in the local and regional economy.”

Johnson will serve on the commission from July 1 to June 30, 2022, and he will help provide insights and leadership that will contribute to the AACC board’s decision-making process and its ability to serve the interests of all AACC member institutions, including Collin College.

The Commission on Economic and Workforce Development is charged with examining ways to close the American skills gaps by focusing career and technical education on preparing students with the knowledge and skills required for existing and future jobs in regional and global economics; showcase cutting-edge innovation that improve student success; and offer affordable, high quality technical assistance in areas that support student success.

Collin College serves more than 55,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates. The only public college based in Collin County, Collin College is a partner to business, government and industry, providing customized training and workforce development. In addition, the college operates the Collin Higher Education Center, which has an enrollment of 3,500 each year in partnership with The University of Texas at Dallas, Texas Woman’s University, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas Tech and the University of North Texas.
