Workforce Spotlight: Construction Technology

Students interested in entering the job market quickly, improving their skills, or changing careers can choose from dozens of workforce programs at Collin College that will train them for rewarding futures.

Programs ranging from animation to welding prepare Collin College graduates to enter the workforce ready to succeed, armed with the technical skills and knowledge that employers are seeking. Connection regularly features programs like this month’s subject: Construction Technology.

Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing

Construction Technology focuses on the hands-on skills and fundamental knowledge needed for the construction trades. Students learn the techniques and processes that are essential for building a career in carpentry, electrical, or plumbing, with focuses on skilled labor and management.

Collin College offers a degree and multiple certificate options for each Construction Technology area. Level 1 certificates focus on trade skills or management. Students seeking degrees or Level 2 certificates have the option to blend their technical skills with a foundation in the business side of the industry. In those classes, students will be exposed to construction materials and methods, blueprint reading, an introduction to management, and mathematics for business.

 

Carpenters

Carpenters build exceptional projects and careers working on a wide variety of jobsites in the construction industry, either with companies or as independent contractors. Collin College’s program teaches residential and light-commercial skills, both interior and exterior, from foundations through roofing.

Collin College’s Electrical program builds on foundational construction principles and basic electrical theory to teach the National Electrical Code, residential wiring, industrial wiring, and commercial wiring, as well as an introduction to construction management.

Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters

Plumbers are problem solvers with new puzzles to figure out every day, from water pressure issues to plumbing design and installation. Collin College’s plumbing program prepares students with the foundation to work in new homes and businesses or to repair existing plumbing systems, providing great career opportunities.
