Feb. 11, 2020 – Collin College was awarded “Rookie of the Year” at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition, held Jan. 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada, in conjunction with the International Builders’ Show (IBS).

A five-member student team from Collin College created a management project proposal for the competition. The proposal included a complete set of working drawings sufficient for obtaining a building permit, material and labor estimates, a construction schedule, and an alternate plan with an additional bedroom.

The team, which consisted of three students in construction management and two in computer-aided drafting and design, submitted the proposal to a panel of construction company executives and defended it in front of an audience at IBS. Collin College’s team competed with more than 50 college and high school teams from across the country.

Team members included drafting students Cole Stewart of Pilot Point and Zoey Smith of Dallas, and construction students Robbie Murray of Anna, Jay Dahya of Frisco, and Truston Cannon of Garland. They are members of the National Association of Home Builders student chapter at Collin College.

“We are extremely proud of this award, and I am confident that this is the first of many awards,” said Craig Johnson, director of architecture and construction programs at Collin College. “This is another step towards achieving our goal of making this program the best in the country.”
