LADY COUGARS BASKETBALL RANKED NATIONALLY, BOTH TEAMS STARTING STRONG

The Collin College Lady Cougars were just ranked 21st in the nation in a National Junior College Athletic Association poll released Dec. 5, reflecting a positive start for the women’s and men’s basketball teams for 2017-18. Both carry winning records into the last month of 2017.

The Lady Cougars are 10-1 going into December after a convincing 101-46 win on the road against Eastern Oklahoma State. The team’s only loss was on the road in a tight game against Angelina College. Other than that, Collin’s women have posted double-digit wins in most of their other contests. The Lady Cougars are shooting about 41 percent from the floor and 32 percent from behind the arc.

The Lady Cougars have a balanced offense, with starters Mya Johnson, Briana Marshall, Jordynn Hernandez, Asia Davis and Ashtyn Beal contributing in between 10-12 points per game on average. But there are contributions from all of the players, with most of the remaining players putting up 6-7 points per game as well. The team averages 79 points per game, while allowing an average of 49 per game from their opponents.

The Cougars took a 7-4 winning record into December after a blowout 104-57 home win over Brookhaven College. Freshman Tajzmel Sherman leads the team in points per game average with 15.4, but he is followed closely by Jackson Nobles (11.7), Tyrick Bennett (11.4) and Jonathyn Washington (11.5).

The men’s team averages 91 points per game, shooting about 48 percent from the field and 34 percent from three-point land.

Catch the Cougars’ and Lady Cougars’ last home games of the year against Richland College. The Lady Cougars tip off at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9. The Cougars play beginning at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13.

The teams will begin their conference play in mid-January with both teams playing Southwestern Christian College, Saturday, Jan. 13. The women tip off at 2 p.m., with the men’s game following at 4 p.m.
