Collin College Honors Veterans in November

Honor veterans throughout the month of November at Collin College.

McKinney, Frisco and Plano Veterans Resource Centers

The VRCs are located in room D200 at the Plano Campus (SCC), room B122C at the McKinney Campus (CPC) and room F141 at the Frisco Campus (PRC).

Holiday Mail for Heroes

Monday, Nov. 5-Friday, Nov. 16

Donate blank holiday cards (Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa), in bundles of three, for recovering servicemen and women at Walter Reed & Fort Belvoir VA hospitals to send holiday cards to their family members. Each holiday card packet should include three blank holiday cards (same holiday per bundle) no glitter, three blank envelopes with postage stamps and one personalized message to a service member. Donation Drive for Blue Star Mothers

Monday, Nov. 12-Friday, Nov. 16
Donate hard candy, trail mix, nuts, protein bars, granola bars, dried fruit, and individual water flavor packets for care packages for deployed service members. Donation boxes are marked on campus. For more information, contact Kim Nyman at knyman@collin.edu.

In honor of our veterans, the Friends of McKinney Public Library and Collin College will host best-selling author and motivational speaker Staff Sergeant Jason Morgan who inspires audiences not only through recounting his remarkable journey — from the Special Forces to living as a wounded veteran, a Paralympic athlete, and a national speaker — but also by providing a roadmap for anyone navigating back from adversity. Founded by Colin Kimball and Ronnie “RD” Foster, the North Texas Fallen Warrior Portrait Project has produced 59 portraits of fallen warriors from Collin County. A traveling exhibition was created to educate the public regarding the valor of local heroes so their stories can be told and their legends preserved. Speaker: Lieutenant Colonel and Chaplain Claude Dean Newby will discuss his service during the Vietnam War and his publications, “It Took Heroes” and “It Took Heroes Volume II” which refer to the soldiers he served.

Newby is the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars w/V for Heroism in Ground Combat, three Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal w/V for Heroism in Ground Combat, Air Medal, Armed Forces Honor Medal (Vietnamese Government) 1st Class, and the Order of Saint Maurice (Patron Saint of Infantry) award.
