Collin College Hosts The Magic of Haitian Art: Expressions Beyond The Waves

Oct. 21, 2019 – The Art Gallery at Collin College will host the exhibition The Magic of Haitian Art: Expressions Beyond the Waves from Wednesday, Oct. 30 through Wednesday, Nov. 20. A reception will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The Magic of Haitian Art: Expressions Beyond the Waves is part of Collin College’s year-long 35th anniversary celebration. This group exhibition of selected artworks combines sculpture, paintings, and voodoo flags. Arranged to tell a story of not only the artist’s perspectives, but to reflect the people, environment, politics, religion, and daily lives of Haiti, these works offer a glimpse into the island’s culture.  Through the creators’ uniquely crafted works, which tend to have an expressive style and brightly saturated hues, the artists convey their messages about the spirit and strength of people in Haiti. Since the 1960s, collectors Glen and Yvonne Stokes of Louisiana have acquired approximately 1,000 works of art. Their collection is primarily from the artists, collectors, and art galleries they came to know during a 20-year period. This traveling exhibition, curated with categorically consistent themes, focuses primarily on the human element in relation to the environment.

The gallery is located on Collin College’s Plano Campus (Spring Creek), Room A175, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. Gallery hours are: 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Thursday; and 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday-Saturday.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a lunch and join faculty, staff, and students for the ART CAFÉ (brown bag lecture series) in the gallery from noon-12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. Collin College Gallery Director Julie Shipp will give more background information about the creators and some insight on this collection based on interviews with Yvonne and Glen Stokes.
