January 28, 2019 – Collin College will celebrate African American History Month with a series of events throughout February. This year’s theme is “Black Migrations,” reflecting the national theme of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

The following events are planned for February:

Feb. 1-28: “The Road to the Promise Land: Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement,” an exhibition by Humanities TexasTM, will be on display throughout February at Collin College’s Frisco Campus Library. Featuring photographs, facsimiles of landmark documents and quotations by Dr. King and others engaged in the struggle for civil rights, the exhibition surveys the Civil Rights Movement from the emergence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights leader in the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 through the 1990s.

Tuesday, Feb. 5: Guest Speaker Kelsey Samuels, a reporter for the Plano Star Courier, will present “The Power of Perspective” in the McKinney Campus Conference Center from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The presentation will delve into how story telling is impacted by personal perspective in the media. Reporters and storytellers are constantly challenged to capture the truth of humanity – at its best and at its worst, regardless of personal perspectives, both positive and negative. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m. at the McKinney Campus Conference Center

Wednesday, Feb. 6: Collin College’s Auteur Film Series will show “In the Heat of the Night,” starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The movie revolves around an African-American homicide detective from Philadelphia who upends a small, conservative Mississippi town when he investigates a murder. Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Frisco Campus Conference Center

Thursday, Feb. 14: Independent Historian and Documentary Photographer Richard Orton will present “The Role of Black Communities During Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Era.” Orton is the author of “The Upshaws of County Line: An American Family.” Thursday, Feb. 14, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center

Thursday, Feb. 14: Attorney Anne Marie Painter will present “Equal Justice for All – From #MeToo to #BlackLivesMatter: Making Sense of Gender and Race-Based Movements on Your Campus and Work Life in 2019.” Thursday, Feb. 14 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the McKinney Campus Conference Center

Monday, Feb. 18: A representative from the Anti-Defamation League will present, “Wide Awake: Discussing Hate Crimes, Symbols, and Modern Extremism in America.” Monday, Feb. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Frisco Campus Conference Center

Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 18-20: The Leadership in the Movies program will show the Marvel Studios movie, “Black Panther,” for one night on each of the main campuses, beginning at 5:30 p.m. each night. A panel discussion will follow the movie. Monday, Feb. 18 at the McKinney Campus Conference Center. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Plano Campus Conference Center. Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Frisco Campus Conference Center.

Friday, Feb. 22: The annual Soul Food Luncheon is planned for noon. This potluck luncheon is open to everyone in the college district. Sign up to bring a dish. Friday, Feb. 22 at noon at the Plano Campus Conference Center
