March 21, 2019 – Visit the tropical paradise that is the youngest state in our union with “The Aloha State: Saying ‘Hello’ and ‘Goodbye’ to the Hawaiian Islands,” a Passport to the World lecture, April 4 at 2:30 p.m. in Pike Hall on Collin College’s McKinney Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Join Dr. Melody Miyamoto Walters and Dr. Lisa Kirby as they discuss our 50th state from the perspectives of someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, and of a native Texan who visited many of the islands. Dr. Miyamoto Walters will dispel some of the myths that “mainlanders” have about Hawaii as she introduces the audience to history and culture of her home state. Dr. Kirby will then detail what it was like to tour the islands and share her takeaways from Hawaii as she made her return to Texas. Both presenters will present personal stories and photos as they share their aloha for Hawaii.
Passport to the World is a free event series led by Collin College faculty and staff members who have traveled to a variety of global locations and share their newly-acquired knowledge about the local history, different cultures, art forms, architecture, music, religions, political systems and more.
