Welcome to Career Corner, a new section in Cougar News which highlights career and technical programs at Collin College. Today, we are focusing on the college’s Construction Management program.

Construction Management Program Facts

  • Average Salary: $101,600*
  • Job Outlook: 23% growth*

Collin College construction management student Ashley Lake and her fellow classmates are currently using the Collin College Technical Campus construction site as a learning laboratory. Textbook passages and lectures come to life in this real-life outdoor classroom.

“There are so many different sides of construction,” Lake said. “I am learning something new every day. It is fun and exciting.”

Lake was first introduced to the construction industry at 15 years old when she assisted her father, a general contractor who remodeled homes.

“I didn’t know the business and commercial construction sides before taking classes at Collin College,” Lake said. “Professor Johnson has different stories to explain the relevance of everything we discuss in class, read about in books or see in slide shows. I couldn’t ask for a better professor. I tell people every day to go into construction because I know the industry is hurting for people right now. I cannot see myself doing anything else. This is the only thing I am passionate about.”

According to Craig Johnson, professor of construction management, more than 40 students are enrolled in the program, and the class size was recently expanded to accommodate the number of students that want to join the construction management program.

“Our program exists because of the need in our local industry,” Johnson said. “In fact, our program was built by industry leaders. Many industry partners are active in our program, and we continually add individuals to our advisory board.”
